How do I know if I need a new oil tank?

Does your oil tank look like any of these?

Cracks
Crazing
Splits

If so, then these are all signs that your tank needs replacing. In a lot of cases, oil delivery drivers will refuse to deliver oil to a tank that is in poor condition, which can leave you with no oil! Frequently Asked Questions

Most tank replacements can be completed in a single day. Bigger jobs might be split over two days.

Costs vary greatly depending on the complexity of the job and the size and type of tank being installed, but prices start at around £1000 inclusive of VAT.

All bunded tanks are covered by a 10 year manufacturer’s warranty, and single skin a 2 year manufacturer’s warranty.
We keep a stock of our most popular tanks, so if you are wanting one of those we can get out to you in as little as 2 days. For other tanks that we need to order in, there is a 2 to 3 week lead time.
A bunded oil tank is covered by a 10 year manufacturer’s warranty, but in reality they usually last 20 to 25 years. Single skin tanks are covered by a 2 year warranty and should last around 7 to 10 years.
There are those out there who will attempt a repair on an oil tank, however in our experience and attempted repair usually doesn’t last long, and the money that you pay an engineer towards attempting a repair is better put towards a new tank

A bunded tank is a double skinned tank, meaning if the inner tank has a leak, the outer tank will catch any oil spilled, which is much safer than a single skinned tank.

I always recommend a bunded tank as they represent better value for money in the long run, however in reality the choice is entirely yours to make. This is something that can be discussed during a quote.
In days gone by, people preferred getting a bigger tank as the more oil you ordered to be delivered, the cheaper per litre it would be. Unfortunately this is no longer the case with most oil suppliers, so there is now not much benefit to having a larger tank. Most people opt for a tank big enough to hold roughly a years worth of oil so that they can top it up twice per year.
We recommend following the OFTEC regulations wherever possible, however the OFTEC regulations are more like safety guidelines, and they are not enforceable by law. Ultimately the choice is yours. Again this is something that can be discussed during a quote.
There are a couple of instances where planning permission is needed to install an oil tank. If an oil tank is to be installed in a front garden, or in to a listed property then these are the most common times that planning permission will need to be sought
Yes an oil tank can be moved. The process is very similar to installing a new tank.
In days gone by, most people used to consider steel tanks as a better option than plastic. Over the past decade or so however, the quality of steel used in tanks has deteriorated to the point that we are getting tanks that we installed only 6 or 7 years ago failing and needing to be replaced. Therefore, we no longer install steel tanks at all.

Oil Boiler servicing

Regular servicing helps keep your oil boiler running safely, efficiently and reliably, while reducing the risk of unexpected breakdowns and potentially extending the life of your heating system. Maximo Oil Fired Heating Solutions provides professional oil boiler servicing throughout Norfolk and Suffolk, covering most makes and models of domestic oil-fired boilers. Whether your annual service is due or you’ve recently moved into a property with oil-fired heating, we can thoroughly inspect and maintain your system.

Why Service Your Oil Boiler?

Why Is an Annual Oil Boiler Service Important?

Many homeowners don’t think about their boiler until it stops working. However, regular servicing is one of the best investments you can make in your heating system. We recommend having your oil boiler serviced once every 12 months. You should also contact us if you notice unusual noises or smells, frequent lockouts, increased oil consumption, soot or smoke, or inconsistent heating and hot water.

Just like a car, your boiler performs best when it’s maintained regularly.

What's Included in an Oil Boiler Service?

Every boiler and heating system is different, but a typical service includes inspection and maintenance of the boiler, burner, oil supply, filters, fire valve, flue and safety devices, together with combustion and efficiency checks.

We’ll also check your oil tank for visible signs of leaks, corrosion or ageing, clean magnetic filters where applicable and carry out final operational checks.

If we identify anything that requires attention, we’ll explain the issue clearly and provide honest advice before recommending additional work.

Benefits of a Modern Oil Boiler

Upgrading to a modern oil boiler can provide greater efficiency, improved reliability and better heating control. Using less fuel to produce the heat your home needs may also help reduce running costs, while newer boilers can be considerably quieter than older systems.

Is It Time to Replace Your Boiler?

A well-maintained oil boiler can provide many years of reliable service, but as it gets older it may become less efficient and increasingly expensive to repair.

It could be time to consider replacement if:

Professional Installation from Start to Finish

Installation can include removal of your old boiler, fitting the new appliance, any necessary pipework or component upgrades, control setup, commissioning and safety testing.

Once installed, we’ll explain how to use your new boiler and provide advice on servicing and maintenance.

Most straightforward boiler replacements can be completed within a day. More complex installations involving pipework alterations or system upgrades may take longer, but we’ll explain the expected timescale before work begins.

If your boiler is relatively new and the fault is minor, repair may be the most cost-effective option. If it’s older, frequently breaking down or becoming expensive to maintain, replacement could offer better long-term value.

Not necessarily. If your existing oil tank is in good condition and suitable for continued use, it may not need replacing. We’ll check its condition and advise you if any work is recommended.
